II. General condition (based on eyewitnesses on Ficanet Christian Communication
Internet Discussion forum)
1. People have been rushing to stores to get whatever they could get.
2. In Bandung, West Java, people were desparate for food. A mother
found herself helpless with her baby crying for milk, after two days without
milk and could only afford water.
3. In Lampung, a family rushed to a hospital. On their way to the hospital,
the father died. When they got to the hospital one of the children died
as well. The mother and another children were hospitalized due to lack
of nutrition. They could only eat once a week, and even that was not very
healthy nor nutritious food.
4. Robbery is everywhere. Restaurants during business hours have been
robbed. Wedding receptions have been targets of robbery as well. People
are afraid to go out in general.
5. A high anti-Ethnic Chinese sentiment is every where. A lot of Ethnic
Chinese are afraid to go out, even to go to work. Even worse, several public
figures, including government officials have been making a lot of racial
remarks, which believed is part of the social setup to change the
central issue of the turmoil, which is a demand on political reform, into
side issues such as an anti-Ethnic Chinese sentiment and anti-Christian
sentiment.
