SHOOTING IN BATU MEJA AREA OF AMBON CITY

The continuing religious conflict in Ambon since July 1999 has tighten tension among the city inhabitants. Beside attacking each other in groups or individuals, since the second week of August 1999 the attacks are also involving people wearing Indonesian national army uniform equipped with complete military standard weapons and ammunition.

This is evident in a shooting incidence in Batu Meja where a group of people wearing army uniform opened fire to a crowd.

>From our field investigation shows that on Thursday, 12 August 1999, around 17:00 local time, a group of Christians visited the Maluku Provinvial Parlement building to protest recent attacks and shooting towards Christians living in Ahuru sector of Karang Panjang village.

After talking to the provinvial parlement members, they went to the  Maluku Police headquarter in Batu Meja area to meet the Head of Maluku Police (KAPOLDA Maluku) in order to file the same protest.

While they, with a bigger crowd, are waiting in the yard of the police headquarter, a shooting rampage towards the crowd came from a car (sedan) with a police number of DE 61 LA, carrying YUNUS NURDIN and his men (wearing army uniform). Some people were injured in this incidence.

Because of the shooting, the crowd stopped the car and then burned it, but the passengers managed to escape. Victims of the incidence were then taken to hospital by using a car. However, when the car passed Bethania church, it was shot several times by people in a jeep (Kijang) with a police number of DE 4800 ..., resulting in death and injury of the driver and some passengers. After the shooting, the jeep quickly left the location.
