Bulak Banteng Madya No.4 To: Director General of Community Guidance for Christian Protestant Department of Religion of Indonesia Jakarta The Report on the Upheaval and Vandalism of the Church on June 9, 1996 I. CHURCH STATUS: Church Name: Gereja Kemah Injil Indonesia, Kalvari Congregation. Pastor: Ev. Wesson Solaiman, S.Th. Members: 20 families/ 50 people II. CHRONOLOGY OF THE EVENT: 1. The service started at 8.30 am 2. At 9.30 am when the mass was still in session, suddenly somebody threw stones from the outside, followed by the entrance of the mob who were carrying various weapons such as planks of wood, bats, rocks, jackhammers, etc. 3. The congregation started to disperse, followed by beatings of congregation members, robbings of jewelries, purses, and money. Meanwhile, I, as the Pastor, was hit three times on the head, causing a wound of 5 cm in length that needs stitches and bruises on my right shoulder. Also, a youth leader had to be hospitalized. 4. A few women were treated indecently (the mob tore their clothes, fondled their breasts and took their jewelries). 5. The church was totally damaged from top to bottom. 6. Things in the Church and in the chapel were destroyed and taken. III. LIST OF DAMAGE: 1. A set of musical instrument (complete) were destroyed and lost. 2. 23 folding chairs were destroyed or lost. 3. 12 benches were totally destroyed. 4. 2 fans were destroyed or lost. 5. The window glasses were destroyed. 6. Front and side doors were totally destroyed. 7. Offering table and chest, offering bags, big and small pulpit were totally destroyed. 8. The glass cover for the baptizing pool was destroyed. 9. The asbestos roof and ceiling were destroyed. 10. Front patio and the supporting pole were destroyed. 11. Office of YBKI (Yayasan Bantuan Kasih Indonesia) and office supplies with the documents were destroyed. 12. Side concrete fence was brought down. 13. Iron fence and fence door were brought down. 14. The second floor building was destroyed (Pastor's resident). 15. Household appliances/ kitchen were destroyed and lost. 16. Lamps were destroyed. 17. Closets, tables, chairs were destroyed. 18. Matrasses were destroyed. 19. Books/ Important documents/ Church documents were destroyed or lost. 20. Two motorcycles (1 owned by the church, a GL.100 + 1 owned by the church member, a Yamaha Astera) were destroyed. 21. A bicycle is destroyed. 22. Clothings/ money of the Pastor's family were destroyed. 23. Important documents of the Pastor (Diplomas, Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate) were destroyed/ lost. 24. Hymn books (Kemenangan Iman) and Holy Bibles were destroyed. IV. REQUEST/ PLEA Recognizing that the Republic of Indonesia is a country based on law, Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution which guarantee the freedom of religion, we as the leaders/ Pastor of the congregation of Gereja Kemah Injil Indonesia Kalvari Bulak Banteng in Surabaya hope that the government will take action on what has happened to our congregation. As for the damages inflicted on the Church and its members, we hope that the government would try to lessen our burden. For the security enforcers, we hope that they can provide us with protection for us and our congregation. This is our report and plea, and we thank you for your kind attention.
